Self-guided Walking Tour
Disabled Access
Building:
Starting Point: Salesians School, Fernbank, North Circular Road, Limerick
Description:
This self-guided walking tour focuses on the high number of surviving nineteenth-century villas along the North Circular Road. These large houses were built for the merchant and professional classes and reflect the prosperous economy of Limerick in the nineteenth century.
Please note:
• All premises are private, and there is NO permission to enter the grounds or the buildings.
• Please wear weather appropriate clothing.
You can print the PDF below; or you can follow the tour using the Google map with further links to photographs of each building, notes on the architectural style, and a historical vignette about the context of the previous occupants. These clippings offer an overview of the history of each house - a more comprehensive account will be included in the upcoming book that Paul is co-writing with Randel Hodkinson.
A link to the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH) will be included for each entry on the map, thereby encouraging you to further explore and engage in the architectural heritage of Limerick.
